In today’s diverse and rapidly evolving marketplace, businesses are trying to get advantages over their competitors, while also keeping up to date with what the industry and their customers need. One thing that provides businesses with significant competition edge is inclusive research.
Inclusive research ensures that products, services, and marketing campaigns are designed to meet the needs of all consumers, including those from the Disabled community. By embedding inclusivity at the heart of your business strategy, you can drive innovation, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance brand loyalty!
Let’s talk about this research method, how to do it and what benefits it would bring to your brand.
Inclusive research is the practice of intentionally capturing insights from a diverse range of participants, ensuring representation across different demographics, disabilities, backgrounds, and perspectives. Unlike traditional research, which often overlooks marginalised voices, inclusive research prioritises equity and accessibility in every stage, from study design to data analysis.

This is a no brainer. By incorporating diverse perspectives and listening to their customers, businesses can create products and services that cater to a broader audience. Inclusive research helps identify unmet needs, leading to groundbreaking innovations that serve a wider customer base.
When brands ensure inclusivity in their research, they unlock new market segments, leading to increased customer engagement and revenue growth. Consumers are more likely to support brands that reflect their values and experiences.
Failing to consider diverse perspectives can result in tone-deaf marketing, product failures, and reputational damage.. Inclusive research helps mitigate risks by ensuring that messaging, branding, and product features resonate positively with all consumers. Don’t let the fear of being called ‘tokenistic’ stop you from doing it, customers know when a brand is truly committed to a cause.
A research strategy that includes a variety of perspectives provides richer and better insights, leading to improved business decisions. It challenges assumptions, making strategies more robust and effective.
We said this at the beginning of this article, brands that prioritise inclusive research stand out in the marketplace! Companies that genuinely embrace diversity build stronger customer trust, foster brand loyalty, and position themselves as industry leaders. Who wouldn’t want that?
Braun wanted to create a diverse and inclusive influencer campaign to show how accessible their razors/trimmers are for the visually impaired community. But before we could create and deliver the influencer campaign, we needed to understand the relationship between personal styling & grooming and the visually impaired community.
The insights we gathered will shape the creative and tonality of the influencer campaign.
The Purple Goat insights and consumer research team created a survey analysing the male grooming habits and personal styling preferences of those with a visual impairment compared to those with no disabilities.
In order to ensure we gathered data that was accurate and representative, we made sure to include respondents who had varying levels of sight loss. And as well as getting the quantitative data, we wanted to understand the behaviours of those with visual impairments more deeply, so we conducted in-depth interviews with some of the largest visually impaired male influencers.
We completed a survey with 500 respondents. 250 of the male respondents were non-disabled, and we used these as our control group. The other 250 had varying degrees of sight loss. We then compared the results across both groups.
To present the data and insights, we wrote up 30+ page insights report for the survey and interviews. The reports were then used to shape the influencer activation that will be used to promote Braun’s new trimmer range.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but an inclusive research sample should be large and diverse enough to capture meaningful insights across different demographics. For quantitative methods, there are minimum amounts you need in order for results to be significant. On the other hand, for qualitative research the more people you speak to, from as many backgrounds as possible, the stronger the research will be.
Yes, training is essential to understand how to remove biases, create accessible research materials, and engage underrepresented communities effectively.
Traditional research often focuses on mainstream consumer groups, while inclusive research intentionally incorporates marginalized voices, leading to richer insights and better business outcomes.
